The Jazz Festival
Date: November 19, 2011
Place: Pollard Hall/Dupont Hall, University of Mary Washington
Fees: $10.00 (solo), 8.00 (ensemble)
Information:
- Purpose: To promote the study and performance of the American Jazz Form by piano students of all ages and levels in a non-competitive setting.
- Selection: One composition in its original form is required (i.e., not a simplified arrangement of Gershwin, Joplin, etc.) and must represent the Jazz idiom, such as blues, rag or boogie. As the Jazz Festival is an opportunity to educate students specifically on jazz style, rhythm and performance, improvisation is strongly encouraged (improvisations should be marked on the score, if different from standard swing. The improvisation element is optional). Minimum length is 12 measures.
- Requirements: Memorization is a requirement for solos. Ensembles may use music. An original copy of the score must be provided to the judges during the festival (no copies). Entrants may use legally produced scores from vendors such as CD Sheet Music provided they include the letter of permission that accompanies this music. In the case that a letter of permission is not available, a copy of the authorized use notice or receipt of purchase must be provided.
- Awards: Students will receive an evaluation, a rating, a certificate, and a ribbon.
- Ratings: Students will be rated on a scale of Superior, Excellent or Very Good on the following criteria: accuracy, rhythm, articulation, interpretation, pedal, memory, and stage presence.
- Judging: To enter pupils, you must judge on the day of Festival or secure a replacement.
- Rating Sheet: All teachers will need a copy of our Judging Form/Ratings Sheet. Copy 2 for each student to bring to the Jazz Festival on that day and hand to the judges when called.
- Registration: To register, please print and complete our 2011 Jazz Festival Application
. The registration deadline is October 22, 2011.
