Rappahannock Music Society is pleased to offer the students of RMS teachers auditions in 2 RMS festivals and the NFMC Junior Festival, aka the Gold Cup Festival.
In a “festival” the students plays memorized compositions before two judges who evaluate the performance. (See Judging Form)
This exercise is invaluable to the teacher and the students as it notes the progress of musical development, and suggests areas of attention in further studies.
The RMS Jazz Festival highlights this uniquely American idiom, and fosters the development of improvisation.
The RMS Sonatina Festival promotes the study of that form of classical compositions.
The NFMC Junior Festival (Gold Cup) is sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs and is a nation-wide event. It promotes the works of American composers. Students earn points based on their assessments and receive gold cups at each 15 point increment. Students choose repertoire from the bulletin listing of required pieces, ranked at each level of development; plus a choice piece of approximate level of difficulty.
To participate in this festival students must have a teacher affiliated with NFMC. In our area, affiliation is offered through membership in RMS. Therefore, only students of teachers who belong to RMS may participate.
