RAPPAHANNOCK MUSIC SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Date of Competition: April 12, 2008           Deadline (received by Chair): March 24, 2008

Place: Central Rappahannock Regional Library Fee: $5 per applicant

ELIGIBILITY:

  1. The teacher of the applicant must be a member of the Rappahannock Music Society with dues paid for the year of competition.
  2. All applicants must have been studying with the presenting teacher for a period of at least six months prior to the competition.

RULES:

  1. Fill out and send application to the RMS Scholarship Chair.  Teachers should submit one check for all their applications. Make checks payable to: Rappahannock Music Society.
  2. Applications and checks must be received by the Chair by the stated deadline.
  3. Pieces are subject to approval of the Scholarship Committee.  The piece must be played by memory.  Competition is by live audition only.  No recorded performances will be accepted.
  4. Applicants are to provide a published copy of the music for the judges use during the performance.  ALL music measures must be numbered.  No photocopies will be accepted without WRITTEN permission from the publisher.
  5. Once the list of competition times is published the teachers can inform the Chair of any student who will not be attending.  Under no circumstance will there be an adjustment to the schedule.  All participating students must be in the room at their reporting time or they may be skipped.  Requests for certain scheduling conflicts that the Chair receives before the application deadline will be considered, but not guaranteed to be granted.
  6. Neither the student or the teacher submitting the application is permitted to change the piece that has been submitted on the application received by the Chair.  The composition listed on the application will be what is performed.  Only if the committee does not approve the original choice can a new one be submitted.
  7. After the application deadline the judges will be given a final list of compositions.   The teachers will be given the assigned competition times for their students as well as a list of the pieces all the applicants will be performing.
  8. Teachers are responsible for telling the student:
    1. to bring music with all measures numbered
    2. to dress appropriately (shirt/tie for boys, dresses or good dress pants for girls)
    3. to report to the library at their assigned time
    4. to remain quiet while waiting to perform and to refrain from commenting on others’ performances
    5. to play the composition that was on the application
    6. to stay until their performance time and to leave afterward
  9. Students should listen for snow closings of the library on the radio.  The competition will be postponed if the Library is closed due to inclement weather and will be delayed if the Library opens late on the day of the competition.  Teachers will be notified of the changes.  Students will NOT be called by the Chair directly.

CATEGORIES

Entrants may choose only one category to enter:  American, Classical, Senior or Vocal. To enter they must be at least an eighth grader and play a piece at the Medium level or above.

    #1 AMERICAN MUSIC American Music category entrants can use the National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Music Festival Bulletin as a guide to distinguish the level of a composition.  The composition does not need to be published in the Bulletin.  Entrants must perform music composed by and American composer at the Medium level or above.

     #2 CLASSICAL MUSIC Entrants must perform classical€ music that is at the Medium level or above.

    #3 SENIOR Entrants who are high school seniors are to compete within their own category by playing one composition of their choice, from the American or Classical categories.  The level must be at Medium or above.

    #4 VOCAL Entrants can sing a composition considered either an American or a classical €ť piece. The NFMC Bulletin can also be used as a guide for this category.  The Chair encourages live accompaniment but will accept an audio recording if given advance notice.

 

SCHOLARSHIPS AND SENIOR AWARD:

*The Vocalist category will have its 1st, 2nd and 3rd placements.

*The Senior Award will have its 1st, 2nd and 3rd placements.

*The Classical Music category is divided into two competitions, based on grade:

1st Competition: Eighth Grade and Ninth Grade students

2nd Competition: Tenth Grade and Eleventh Grade students

There will be first, second and third placements for each of those two levels of competition.

*The American Music category is divided into two competitions, based on level:

1st Competition: American Music ~ Medium to Moderately Difficult III

2nd Competition: American Music ~ Difficult I to Musically Advanced II

There will be first, second and third placements for each of those two levels of competition.

The categories listed receive the same amount for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes with monies awarded to the teacher to be credited to the student’s future lessons and/or music purchases:

1st Place: $175

2nd Place: $150

3rd Place: $125

Seniors receive their own amounts and monies are awarded directly to them:

1st Place: $200

2nd Place: $175

3rd Place: $150

DECISIONS OF THE JUDGES ARE FINAL

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME PRIZES WILL NOT BE AWARDED

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOME CATEGORIES WILL NOT BE HEARD.  THERE MUST BE TWO OR MORE ENTRIES IN EACH CATEGORY FOR COMPETITION TO TAKE PLACE.
